The Planned Giving Design Center provides research, content, and networking services to over 30,000 Planned Giving professionals nationwide. PGDC's growth soon overwhelmed the capacity of their Joomla/MS SQL Server SaaS platform. Plus, maintaining an inefficient system was costing too much. Carr Systems was tasked with analyzing the current system, developing an Application Lifecycle Management plan, and modernizing the legacy platform in order to meet PGDC's immediate needs and anticipated growth.
Solution:
Upon completion of the systems analysis, Carr recommended moving the SaaS platform to Drupal and re-architecting the Microsoft SQL Server database. This modernization effort would take approximately six months, with the Drupal framework providing a much more robust foundation for what was quickly becoming an enterprise-level application. Techniques utilized during this engagement included reverse engineering of the legacy application, all phases of software design and development, and a system documentation wiki to simplify system management going forward.
Impact:
PGDC is a growth company in a market that is beginning to experience a generational wealth transfer estimated at over $10 trillion. PGDC's new SaaS platform is designed to support the company's projected growth. Existing customers are very pleased with the modernized system, new customers are signing up, and support costs have been reduced.
Carr Systems continues to provide consulting and development services to PGDC. The ALM plan includes phases for scheduled upgrades, expanded functionality, new APIs, and support of future business partnerships.
